In our current working environments, work related stress in on the increase. In 2022/23 The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) Annual Statistics on Work Related Ill Health and Workplace Injury (https://www.hse.gov.uk/statistics/overview.htm) reveal that 1.8 million workers reported they were suffering from work-related ill health in 2022/23, with approximately half of the cases down to stress, depression or anxiety.stress.  In the recent years prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the rate of self-reported work-related ill health had been broadly flat, but the current rate is higher than 2018/19.  There were an estimated 875,000 cases of work-related stress, depression or anxiety in 2022/23. The current rate of self-reported work-related stress, depression or anxiety is higher than the pre-pandemic level.

If untreated, stress can lead to further difficulties such as anxiety and depression.

As mental health services have moved more towards social inclusion, we find there are more positive employers of people with mental health difficulties. However, the awareness around common mental health difficulties remains an area for improvement.

HSE’s chief executive Sarah Albon said: “Preventing or tackling work-related stress can provide significant benefits to employees, improving their experience of work and their overall health; and also to employers including increased productivity, decreased absenteeism and reduced staff turnover.”  In line with this, as Registered Psychologists, we are able to deliver training to organisations on a variety of subjects, such as How to Manage Stress, How to Increase Wellbeing, and on the range of mental health difficulties and how they may affect the individuals you work alongside.  We can create bespoke packages to attend to the wellbeing of your employees.

If this is something you think your team may like to hear more about, or if you are interested in us providing training to your service, then please contact us.
